On foreign OC names
Context: Email conversation about the meaning of an OC name. I had a group of animal-based OCs whose names were basically their animal in Tagalog. (I was lazy. It produced instant meaningful names. They sounded pretty cool. It was a nice way to practice writing and speaking Tagalog. Immersion is the best way to learn, right? Sue me.) My friend caught on to my pattern, and realized that she could figure out the character's animal by going on Google Translate. Unfortunately, online translators are not perfect. She ran into some problems when I introduced a wolf OC. Again, paraphrased convo.
Friend: I looked on the translator and I got "balloon." Explanation?
Me: WOLF. FREAKIN' WOLF. WHERE THE HELL DID BALLOON COME FROM?
Friend: PFFFFFFT. Well, the first suggestion that came up was "balloon", then "wolf", then "werewolf." Either way, it was FUNNY. PFFFT. XD
Me: ZIOSHF:LSDBFLKSFVHSLDFHMFGKASFVJKFDS That's how you're going to remember him, aren't you? A balloon.
Friend: Yup.
